The Indian Institute of Mass Communication set up the Northern Regional Centre at Jammu in 2012 to extend its national footprint. The centre began operating out of Vikas Bhawan at Railhead Complex with an intake capacity of 15 students in the first batch. The hostel and guesthouse (for visiting faculty) is situated at Gandhi Nagar.
In 2016, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir allotted 123 Kanaal (approximately 15 Acres) in Keran, Bantalab area of Jammu for construction of the permanent campus. Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the campus on February 3, 2019. The Civil Construction Wing (CCW) of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting stationed at Jammu is carrying on the construction of the complex. The construction is in full swing and is likely to be complete by the end of this year. The permanent campus has the administrative block, hostels for boys and girls and faculty quarters.
