Post-graduate Diploma Courses

The IIMC enjoys pride of place amongst centres of education for mass communication in India. It offers Post-graduate Diploma Courses to those aspiring for a career in the media. The Diploma courses provide for a harmonious blend of theory and practicals to equip students with basic skills needed at entry level in the media industry. Besides providing a perspective, the course aims to define the role of media persons in Society. The course structure is dynamic, to subsume emerging technologies in the rapidly developing media field. The requirements of the industry are kept in mind and the course endeavors to impart to the students a sense of responsibility so that they would be able to effectively discharge their duties in a multi linguistic, multi religious and multi dimensional society.

Diploma Course in Development Journalism

The IIMC conducts a prestigious Diploma Course in Development Journalism for mid-career journalists from non-aligned and developing countries. The course is organized under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) and Special Commonwealth African Assistance Plan (SCAAP) Programmes of the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. This course, which is of four months duration, is organized twice a year; the first from January to April and the second from August to December.

Over the past 27 years that this course has been in existence, the IIMC has had the proud privilege to train 846 participants from 97 countries, ranging from Afghanistan to Albania and Zambia to Zimbabwe.

Short Courses, Workshops, Seminars and Conferences

The Institute has been organizing short courses, workshops, seminars and conferences on various themes of communication with a view to contributing to a better understanding of mass communication issues in the context of India and other developing countries.

The Institute runs regular and short-term academic programmes for personnel of different media units of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. A number of specialized short courses of one week to three-months duration are also conducted to meet the professional training needs of communication personnel working in various media/publicity organizations of the central/state governments and public sector undertakings.

During the past 39 years, the Institute has organized 478 short courses, workshops and seminars of varying durations, in which nearly 10674 participants (including Indian and foreign) have participated.

Indian Information Service Foundation Course

The IIMC is the training institution for Indian Information Service Officers (IIS). The Institute provides a learning ground for the entrants to this service in communication techniques and orients them towards public information systems. The focus of the course is on information policies and strategies. The following training programmes are organized for officers of the Indian Information Service:

1. Foundation Course in Communication for Officers of the Information Service, Group 'A'; and

2. Orientation Course for Officers of the Indian Information Service, Group 'B'.
