Brief Profile of Prof.(Dr.) Surbhi Dahiya
Prof (Dr.) Surbhi Dahiya is presently working as Professor and Course Director in the Department of English Journalism at Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) (under Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India). She was appointed as the first Dean Students Welfare of IIMC in 2016. She also headed the department of AdPr for two years. She is former Editor Communicator (UGC Care Listed Journal). She also served as a member of Executive Council and IIMC Society for a period of two years. Presently, she is a member of Academic Council. She started her career as a correspondent with The Tribune and later shifted to academics in 2003. She served DCAC, Delhi University for eight years. She was the Convenor of the Academic Executive Committee of DCAC, DU, Associate Editor and Coordinator for Research Journal Intellectual Resonance- DCAC Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies (ISSN 2321-2594). was appointed Co-ordinator of the Syllabus Revision Committee of BA (Honours) Journalism, University of Delhi
Internationally, Prof. Dahiya has represented India at many platforms. She is the IAMCR Faculty Ambassador. Prof. Dahiya was the SUSI Scholar from India and completed the Study of the United States Institute Programme organized by the United States Department of State, conducted at the Ohio University USA in 2017. She also participated in AEJMC Conference at Chicago in 2017. She was elected as the Liason Chair for Academia and Industry by the newly formed South Asian Communication Association (SACA). Prof. Dahiya chaired a number of sessions and presented many Research papers nationally and internationally and has many Research papers and Projects to her credit. She was the convenor of World Journalism Education Council WJEC- IIMC- UNESCO Roundtable in India held in August 2021; She chaired a session at JRE, IAMCR, Nairobi, Kenya (and wherever you are) (July 2021); She presented a paper at the 5th World Journalism Education Congress held at Paris-Dauphine University, Paris (July 2019). She was invited to present Power Research Talk in ICA (SACA) held at Prague, Czech republic (May 2018); World Press Freedom Day at Helsinki, Finland, jointly organized by UNESCO and the Government of Finland (May 2016); Journalism Education at IAMCR, Leicester, UK (July 2016; Montreal, Canada (July 2015); UNESCO invited her to present on Safety of Journalists in Montreal, Canada (July 2015); AMIC conference at AUD, Dubai (June 2015); She was an invited delegate for a roundtable workshop conducted by ESRC and ICSSR on social media research held in Jan 2015 at London.
Her mission is to train journalists, students, industry and government professionals capable of serving the society usefully. She has a vision to promote Indian scholarship internationally. She was the Convenor, World Journalism Education Council –WJEC- IIMC-UNESCO Roundtable ( India) on 10-11 August 2021. She was the Nodal Officer, IIMC for 28th “State Information Officers Conference”- SIMCOM by Ministry of I & B in December 2016 at Vigyan Bhawan. She tied up with Googlenewslabs for IIMC in 2016-2017 and organised various workshops for students as DSW in 2017. She wants to contribute in meaningful media and communication research and explore new dimensions with a special focus on Media Management, Reporting and safety of Journalists. Academically, Dr Dahiya is a Gold medalist in graduation and studied with scholarship and fee waiver throughout. She holds a Ph. D degree in Media studies and a dual Masters degree. Her thesis was on “Media Management in the Global Scenario: A study of the Changing Management Practices in Media.” She is M.Sc in Mass Communication and Technology and an MBA in HR. Her major interest areas are Media management and Political economy; Reporting and safety of Journalists; and Media Education and Research.
Dr Dahiya’s latest book is ‘Beat Reporting and Editing: Journalism in the Digital Age’ published by SAGE publications. (2021). Dr Dahiya is writing extensively on Indian Media Organisations. She is the author of “The House that ZEE Built” by Rupa Publications.( Foreword- Prof Alan Albarran, USA) Her upcoming book this year (2022) is ‘Indian Media Giants: Unveiling the Business Dynamics of Print Legacies’ by Oxford University Press (USA) ( Forword – Prof Graham Murdock, Preface- Prof Tim Vos). She also compiled “Connecting Threads: A Compendium of Indian Media Educators” published by Exchange4Media Books (Released at Media and Media Educators Summit 2018 (she was co-convenor) at India International Center, New Delhi).
Dr Dahiya initiated media awards in India for media educators along with E4M and Businessworld in 2018 and was the Jury member for the same. Dr Dahiya was conferred the Women Economic Forum (WEF) award 2019 for “Iconic Woman” as an Exceptional Leaders of Excellence. She won the National Award by Public Relation Society of India (PRSI) for Contribution to Mass Communication Education in India and the Lifestyle Journalistic TLJ Jury Awards" for Excellence in the field of Journalism Education in 2019. She also won First position as Laureate of the Community leadership contest at the World Journalism Education Congress (WJEC) Whova contest, Paris 2019. She was conferred the fourth Satya Jangid Smriti Sammaan by Indian Association of Mass Communication (Regd) in 2019. Her students won an award of 1 Lakh from Ministry of Transport for making Road safety campaign. She was a jury member for various prestigious award.
Prof. Dahiya was Principal Investigator for Research project for Commomwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia (CEMCA) and Co- Principal Investigator for a project of Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, United Nation Environment Programme, GEF and IIMC on “Capacity Building on Bio safety.” Prof Dahiya was a committee member for developing India’s Global Media Plan for Print, Electronic and Online Media budget for Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India and a Technical Evaluation Committee Member in India Brand Equity Foundation, Ministry of Commerce as well as Technical Committee Member for Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion for selection of Creative agency for Start ups India. She was also a Jury Member for selecting the name ‘Jan Dhan’ for Comprehensive Financial Inclusion Plan in Department of Financial Services, Department of Finance, Govt. of India.
Prof. Dahiya was Course Director for many short term courses for Ministry of Defence and DRDO, SSB Officials, Government PR Officers, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF)(PR Officers) and Corporate trainings like TATA Steel at TATA Center, Kolkata, NTPC etc. She conducted a workshop on “ Effective Use of Social Media “ for the media team and staff members of Honourable Vice President of India in 2020. She delivered many special lectures at various Universities, CEC ( EDUSAT), Delhi Judicial Academy ( for Magistrates/ Judges etc), Ministry of Defence (for Major Generals, Brigadiers and officials of Defence services), PRIDE- Lok Sabha Secretariat, LBSNAA, CPDHE, Indian Forest Services, Directorate of Field Publicity/ to officials of Indian Ordinance Factories Services, IIM Bangalore, CRPF, NDRF, Health and family welfare, Field Publicity officers, PR officials, Kolkata Press Club, NCERT, SCOPE, V.V. Giri National Labour Institute’s workshop ( Ministry of Labour and Employment), Resource Person for various workshops and seminars like UNICEF, 40 reputed Indian Universities, Chhattisgarh state Child Rights Protection Commission, Mahila Samanwaya etc. She was an invited delegate at Simhasta International Conference, Kumbh, Ujjain She is a Board member, Ph.D co-guide, expert committee member, external examiner, moderator for many Indian Organisations (like ICSSR) and Universities.
