Separate Mediacells: Opportunities
Unmasked
"There is huge potential every where and
one should strive for excellence always" - Neelam Kapoor
The reports suggesting the intention of the Finance
minister to have a separate media wing for his ministry have raised some
qualms in certain quarters. But a dispassionate quest into the whole
issue unveils a bright horizon of opportunities. The government
publicity, which is already suffering from the lack of adequate
financial assistance and manpower, has now an opportunity before it to
expand the realms of its activity more effectively. The publicity wing
of the ministry of defence, which is a part of the PIB headed by an
Additional PIO, is being already given a special grant by the MoD for
effective information dissemination. Also, they have been provided with
specialist officers from Army, Navy and Airforce to do work which
requires specialist knowledge.
The information officers should exploit this situation to rise to the
occasion and prove themselves to be effective and not some one to be
dispensed with. As Ex PIO, I Rammohan Rao put, there
is a felt need for specialisation in all these fields. This is
a challenge information people have to cope with. There is a need to
develop expertise in multimedia campaign, says Mrs. Neelam Kapur, DPR
Finance, while arguing that there is huge potential every where and one
should strive for excellence always. The whole exercise has to be seen
in the greater background of strengthening the public information system
of the government of India and should be approached positively for
greater common good.
