Indian Institute of Mass Communication’s Regional Centre in Central India came up in Amravati district in Western Vidarbha region of Maharashtra State in 2011. It was with the blessings of the then President of India, Mrs. Pratibha Devisingh Shekhavat Patil, the IIMC Western Regional Centre was established at the Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University.
Amravati has mythological importance as Rukmini eloped with Lord Krishna from the famous Ambadevi Temple here. The Pandavas also spent their time in Chikhaldara, a hill station in the mountainous region of Melghat, that is also a home to Melghat Tiger Reserve, one of the nine reserves established in the country in 1972. Amravati is a land of saints. Sant Gadge Baba, Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj and the blind saint Gulab baba belonged to this district. Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, martyr Rajguru had been regular visitors to the world-famous Hanuman Vyayam Prasarak Mandal during freedom struggle. This Mandal was a nursery of freedom fighters then. Besides the historic Ambadevi and Ekveera devi temples in the city, Riddhapur is considered Kaanshi of Mahanubhav sect while Muktagiri near Paratwada house temples of 116 Jain saints. Culturally, Amravati has had a rich tradition of music and theatre. Bal Gandharva used to hold his musical concerts here to pay his debts. It is a land of Dr. Panjabrao alias Bhausaheb Deshmukh, the first Agriculture Minister of Independent India, who opened doors of education to sons of the soil by establishing Shree Shivaji Education Society, the second biggest in Maharashtra. Dr. Shivajirao Patwardhan, Veer Wamanrao Joshi, Adv. Dadasaheb Khaparde were the personalities from Amravati who made deep impact on politics of pre-independence era.
IIMC’s Western Regional Centre in Amravati opened its doors to graduate students with the introduction of Postgraduate Diploma Programme in English Journalism in 2011. Since then, IIMC Amravati has been consistently nurturing journalism talents with commitment, quality and industry-readiness. In the year 2017, Postgraduate Diploma Programme in Marathi Journalism was launched here with a view to set new quality standards in journalism training in the regional milieu with specific focus to impart quality training in language media on a national scale. This decision paved the way for students across Maharashtra to get quality education in Journalism from the most reputed institute. The courses have earned good reputation with its students’ pursuing careers in major media organizations within the country.
The center is blessed with a dedicated teaching and non-teaching staff and continuously striving to earn glory through innovative approach in teaching as well students are encouraged to excel their skills. The presence of students at various social, cultural, political, educational events taking place in the city helped the institute take its identity among the masses. The institute has grown up under the leadership of many dedicated Regional Directors like Mr. Nadeem Khan, Mr. Vijay Satokar, Dr. Anil Saumitra. After taking over the charge of the IIMC Amravati Campus by Prof. (Dr.) Virender Kumar Bharti in February 2022, the institute is sensitized with new vibrancy through creation of healthy working culture. All Academic and non-academic activities are being conducted professionally with the active association of students, expert outsourced faculties and in-house faculties.
The Western Regional campus of IIMC is situated in thesprawling lush green, scenic locale at Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University, around 5 km away from Amravati railway station. It is a residential campus with an Academic Cum Administrative Block, Students’ Hostel, Guest Suite and other facilities.
IIMC Amravati campus is all set to have its own building on a sprawling 14 acre land near Badnera. The construction work is likely to start this year only. Once in its own premises, it envisions to enhance its stature by initiating a bunch of new short-term courses for communication professionals from public and private sector and more number of PG Diploma courses. In the coming years, IIMC Amravati aspires to be the main hub of mass communication and media training in Maharashtra and Central India.
