The Northern Regional Centre of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) was started in 2012 at a rented accommodation provided by the Government of J&K in Jammu. The Centre was shifted to the present permanent premises on December 6, 2022.

The foundation stone for the new campus was laid by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of Bharat Shri Narendra Modi on February 3, 2019. Nestled in an environmentally rich location, the new premises house an administrative block, separate hostels for girls and boys, a mess, faculty quarters, a library, a computer lab, a conference room, a seminar hall, and a TV studio. The campus is surrounded by lush greenery and picturesque landscapes.

In 2012, the Centre commenced operation with the first batch intake capacity of 15 students for Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism (English). Over the period, it introduced two more Post Graduate Diploma courses in Journalism (Hindi) and Digital Media from the academic year 2022-23. The present intake of each course is 20 students. However, the number of seats in each course has been increased to 30 each course from the academic session 2024-25. The core mission of Jammu regional centre is to foster a dynamic learning and working environment that cultivates new ideas, creativity, research, scholarship, and development of leaders and innovators in the field of mass communication.
